Gregorian chant and plainchant: a long-lasting tradition

While the musical notation evolved, mainly with the development of polyphonic music during the 14th century and music printing during the 16th century, the musical form of plainchant, with a Gregorian notation, continues until the 17th century, maybe even until the 18th century through liturgical music recorded in rituals, breviaries and antiphonaries and to a lesser degree in missals, mainly used by priests and cantors.
